Planning Next Summer’s School Heating Works? Start This Autumn

The school summer holiday is the only time most schools can take their heating out of action for weeks at a time. It is also only six weeks long. If you are hoping to replace a boiler room or upgrade the heating next summer, the time to start planning is now, not after Easter.
Here is why autumn matters, and what a realistic timeline looks like.
Why start this early?
A boiler room replacement does not start on the first day of the holidays. Before any work begins on site, the system needs surveying, the new plant needs designing and pricing, and the funding needs to be in place. Equipment such as boilers, heat pumps and controls can have lead times of several weeks, and the contractor needs to have the job booked into a summer that every school in the country wants.
Schools that start in the spring often find the work has to be squeezed, scaled back or pushed to the following year.
A realistic timeline
- Autumn: survey the existing plant and agree what needs to happen.
- Late autumn and winter: design, pricing and any funding applications.
- Spring: confirm the order, programme the works and order long lead equipment.
- Summer holidays: strip out, installation and commissioning.
- September: the system is running and tested before the heating season starts.
Funding
Many school heating projects rely on capital funding, and bidding windows usually open in the autumn and close over the winter. A survey and a costed scope of works make for a much stronger application than an estimate, so it helps to get those done early. Check the current guidance for your type of school, as the rules and dates change from year to year.
What if the boiler fails before then?
An old boiler does not always wait for the summer holidays. If it fails during term time, a temporary boiler can keep classrooms warm while the permanent replacement is planned properly. Our sister company, Boiler Hire UK, supplies temporary boilers from 90kW to 600kW. We have also supported a Sheffield school after an emergency boiler failure, moving from temporary heat to a permanent system.
What good looks like
We recently rebuilt a school boiler room from the ground up with modern high-efficiency boilers, and delivered the full mechanical package for a new build school. Both came down to the same thing: a clear plan agreed early, so the work on site could run to programme.
