Heat Pump Installation with Waste Heat Recovery – Sustainable Plant Room Upgrade

At Mellor & Mottram, we take real pride in delivering high-quality engineering solutions — and this latest project is one we’re especially proud of.
Our team recently completed the installation of three Ideal ECOMOD 50 kW heat pumps, alongside a full plant room upgrade incorporating new pipework, a buffer vessel, and a plate heat exchanger designed to recover waste heat from a cremator.
This project combined renewable heating technology with intelligent energy recovery — creating a highly efficient and forward-thinking solution.
Installing Three Ideal ECOMOD 50 kW Heat Pumps
The system was designed around 3 x 50 kW Ideal ECOMOD heat pumps, providing scalable, low-carbon heating output suitable for a demanding commercial environment.
Heat pumps are increasingly being specified as part of modern commercial heating installations due to:
- Reduced carbon emissions
- Lower long-term running costs
- Improved energy efficiency
- Future-ready compliance with decarbonisation targets
By installing three modular units, the system benefits from redundancy and staged operation — improving resilience and enabling more precise load matching.
Complete Plant Room Upgrade
Beyond the heat pumps themselves, this project included a full redesign and installation of the plant room infrastructure.
Works included:
- New plant room pipework throughout
- Installation of a correctly sized buffer vessel
- System controls and commissioning
- Integration with existing heating distribution
The buffer vessel plays a key role in stabilising system temperatures and improving overall performance, particularly when working with heat pump technology.
Attention to detail in plant room pipework is critical, and our engineers delivered a clean, organised and professionally finished installation that reflects the high standards we apply across all plant room installations and upgrades.
Recovering Waste Heat from the Cremator
One of the most innovative aspects of this installation was the inclusion of a plate heat exchanger designed to recover waste heat from the cremator.
Rather than allowing excess heat energy to be lost, the plate heat exchanger captures usable thermal energy and transfers it into the building’s heating system. This significantly improves overall energy efficiency and reduces the site’s reliance on external energy sources.
Waste heat recovery systems like this are increasingly being integrated into energy-efficient heating solutions, helping commercial sites reduce operational costs and meet sustainability targets.
A Sustainable and Future-Proof Heating Solution
This project showcases how modern commercial heating systems can combine:
- Renewable heat pump technology
- Intelligent energy recovery
- Efficient plant room design
- High-quality installation standards
The result is a resilient, energy-efficient system built for long-term performance.
At Mellor & Mottram, we specialise in the design and delivery of commercial boiler replacements, heat pump systems, and full heating upgrades across the UK.
If you’re considering a heat pump installation, plant room upgrade, or waste heat recovery solution, our team can assess your site and design a tailored system built around efficiency, reliability and sustainability.
